Hebrews 1:1-14
The theme of Hebrews is that Jesus is greater than everything. As you consider your life, what inferior things compete with him for supremacy? What are you drawn to that will never satisfy?
The author of Hebrews begins his argument by pointing out that Jesus is the ultimate king, creator, and savior of the world. Through each of these attributes he proves his superiority. As king he rules over everything and all of creation. As the creator he made us and, therefore, has the right to tell us how to live. He designed humanity to live in submission to him and according to his blueprint. Finally, as savior he has accomplished everything necessary for our forgiveness and eternal life. Since this is true why would we give our allegiance to anything else? Often God’s greatness makes us feel like there is a massive chasm between us and him, even after coming to faith in Christ. Many traditions claim you need to pray through saints or other means because you cannot go to God by yourself. Yet Hebrews points out that not only is Christ great, but he also wants to have a relationship with us. Though we did not create, are not divine, and cannot save ourselves, we are valued by God. Hebrews 1 shows God’s high regard for us as proven through Jesus’ death on our behalf and the fact that angels serve us. God created them so they could help us. As you go about your day today, remember the greatness of Jesus and the greatness of his love for you.
Father, you are the most kind, caring father anyone could desire. Amen.
Why does God love you so deeply despite your consistent sin?
