Titus 3:1-15
Titus 3 begins with a bad word. It calls for us to submit. Depending on your translation it may read: to be subject to, to put yourself under, or to yield. How do you feel about this word? How do you feel about living this out?
One of the unique teachings of Christianity is a willingness to submit. The world tells us to assert our rights and make life about us, while Titus is told to teach people to "be subject to rulers and authorities." They are not to riot or protest, but instead willingly be subject to the pagan Roman authorities over them. Our flesh yearns to reveal our power, while the way of Jesus was to submit, surrender, and be willing to die. There may be times when we cannot give in to the demands of the government as seen by Daniel, the early apostles, etc. However, the general theme of our lives should be to "be subject to." We should put the needs of others above our own, we should seek to submit to authorities in our lives and seek to be a servant. The area where we learn full submission is in our relationship with God. He initiated our salvation through the sending of his Son and “justified us by his grace.” All he has accomplished for us should lead us to surrendering and submitting everything to him.
Father God, help me learn what it means to be subject to the authorities you have placed over me, especially you. Help me to be a humble servant of yours, seeking your glory in all things. Amen.
What are some practical ways you can be subject to the authorities over you and especially fully submissive to God?
