2 Timothy 1:1-18
2 Timothy is our second pastoral epistle/leadership book. It continues the theme of 1 Timothy concerning the qualifications and actions of a leader. If you were to write down all the qualifications you think are important for leadership, what would they be? Do they match Paul’s list?
Paul begins his letter to Timothy by describing the importance of faith. Our relationship with God becomes the foundation for us to be able to lead others. Out of Timothy’s faith, Paul calls him to boldly lead others to Christ. There will be influences which try to silence and shame him, but he must not cave to these pressures. Instead, he must remember all Christ has done for him and, out of gratitude, share Christ with everyone he can. The encouragement in this work is that Timothy is not alone. Paul has modeled this disciple-making lifestyle, the Spirit empowers Timothy to live this way, and others in the church are living up to this same calling. The question is: are you doing this?
We will experience pressure to be silent about Jesus. We will want to simply fit in and conform to the attitudes around us, but God has called us to something different. We are called like Timothy to be a disciple who makes disciples and therefore boldly makes Christ known. We are never to be ashamed but instead are to testify about Christ.
Father God, help me to always remember what Christ has done for me. Out of this understanding help me to make you known to everyone I can. Amen.
What pressures you into silence about Jesus? How can you more effectively testify about him?
