1 Timothy 2:1-15

If you were to take over a company, what is the first thing you should do? If you were promoted to boss, what should your first act be? If you are a new parent or entering into a marriage, what is the best first step you should take as a leader? Paul in 2 Timothy 2 is going to help us answer these questions.

We might think leadership starts with casting vision or making a loud, energizing speech, but Paul says, “first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone.” Paul says the first thing a leader should do is pray. This may surprise us. We often have the perspective of the world that to lead is to do something and prayer is doing nothing. Yet God has a completely different mindset. Leaders are prayers, and praying is leading. If you remember, as we read through the Gospels, there were several times when Jesus went off to pray when the disciples pressed for action. If we are going to lead others, then we must be led by God, and this means we need to spend time with him in prayer. We need to be energized by him, shepherded by him, gain his mindset, and gain his heart. Leadership prayer is not just praying for us but for others. We are to pray for people before we lead them. We should pray for them, for their hearts, for their lives, and for our relationship with them. As we seek to be leaders, as we walk as disciples who make disciples, let us start with prayer.

Father God, help me to prioritize time with you. Help me to seek you, spend time with you, and be led by you. Amen.

Why do we often think that prayer is doing nothing?
