1 Thessalonians 5:4-28

Are you the same person during the day as you are at night? Most of us are probably the worst version of ourselves at night. We get tired, grumpy, angry, and just want to be left alone. This is even more true as we consider crime rates, DUIs, and other illegal activity during the day versus at night. Darkness brings out the worst in everyone, which is why, as believers, we are to remember we are “children of the light and children of the day” and live according to our identity.

So, how should children of the day live? Paul ends his letter to the Thessalonians by describing exactly what it looks like. We are to be awake and sober. We are to have our eyes open to what God is doing around us today and the imminent return of Christ to our world. We are also to be appropriately dressed for the day. We are to cast off our pajamas and put on faith, love, and hope. We are to encourage others, rejoice always, pray continually, and walk in thankfulness. Finally, we experience the sanctifying work of God in our lives as we are continually conformed to the likeness of Christ.

Father God, enable me to walk in the ways of the day and of your light today. Help me to cast off anything that does not conform to you, so I can more freely walk in your light and in your ways. Amen.

Where in your life do you need to live out of your identity as a child of the light and a child of the day?
