1 Corinthians 3:5-23
We live in a celebrity obsessed culture. People who are simply famous for being famous capture millions of views and have influence without expertise. 1 Corinthians 3 shows us this is not a new phenomenon. In the early church people were focused on people like Paul, Apollos, and Cephas and bragged about their connection to them. Instead, attention, affection, and loyalty are to be on Jesus alone. If you think you are immune to this, do you ever find your faith affected by the falls or scandals of Christian leaders? Do you find yourself drawn to celebrity preachers more than flesh and blood people right in front of you?
Sadly, many people have tied their faith to earthly leaders who, when caught in a scandal, cause them to throw away their faith. They believe hypocrisy invalidates the gospel. We should celebrate faithful life-long examples of following Jesus but we need to ensure that our commitment is to the only faithful, perfect, and righteous one. Jesus is the one who died on the cross for our sins; no one else. Jesus is the one who sent the Holy Spirit; no one else. Jesus is the one who rose from the dead; no one else. Therefore, we need to make sure that our attention is on him. We can learn from sermons, we can be mentored by leaders, but all those things should ultimately point us to Christ. Everyone is imperfect except Christ, so our eyes, faith, and lives need to be centered around him and him alone.
Father God, help my ultimate loyalty be to you alone. Help our church to find unity in your Son and keep you at the core of everything. Amen.
How can you ensure Christ remains the foundation of everything in your life?
