Romans 7:14-8:8
Have you ever done something you wish you had not done? Have you ever committed a sin and afterward wondered why you did it? Of course you have! This is a reality of living in our fallen world but this does not have to be the way we live.
Romans 7:14-8:8 describes the spiritual battle which wages inside each of us. We find ourselves constantly failing to live a righteous life, and Paul says this is due to the war within us. Even as believers our flesh/sinful nature and our longing to obey God are constantly in tension with each other. On our own we could never please God, but thankfully Christ has done all that is necessary to free us from condemnation. Since we are free from under the cloud of guilt and shame, we can now choose to live "according to the Spirit” (8:4). On our own we will fail, but we can overcome through the Spirit. We can walk victoriously, set our mind on what the Spirit desires, please God, and experience the life and peace which Christ died to give us. Freedom is available and victory is possible, but this is only possible through a continual yielding to God’s work.
Father God, help me to be empowered and filled by your Spirit so that I can live in a way that pleases you and allows me to walk in the fullness of life. Amen.
What would it look like for you to set your mind on what the Spirit desires and live yielded to the Spirit?
